The Mill
Hine, Lewis. “The Mill.” http://www.historyplace.com/unitedstates/childlabor/hine-whitnel.htm
The American Dream for children from 1880-1890 was not possible. From 1880-1890 boys worked in coal mines covered in dirt. As time went on the Fair Labor Standards Act was challenged by the Supreme Court, but soon ended child labor in 1938(“Keating-Owen Child Labor Act of 1916(1916)”).Over one hundred years later, in 1992, over 64,100 children had to go to the emergency room from work-related injuries. The Fair Labors Act does not allow anyone under 18 to work in dangerous companies. Five million youth work and over thousands get injuries and even die because they do not have any barriers that protect them in their work area. The girl in the picture above has been working in a mill for one year. She cannot even remember how old she is, when asked (“3. Child Labor In The U.S. Is Worse Today Than During the1930’s”).
